Abstract: 

The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE), known also as the “photogalvanic effect,” is a resonant nonlinear process generating photocurrent in materials having inversion asymmetry. It drives great interest in solar energy conversion in ferroelectric perovskites because the induced open-circuit voltage can be much larger than the band-gap energy. The origin of the DC nonlinear photocurrent can be of several mechanisms including the shift current, injection current, and the ballistic photocurrent. However, the chirality of such exotic nonlinear photocurrents is yet to be fully understood. Here, we discuss the spectral response of several materials systems, including recent observations of the polarized spectral responsivitivity originating at interfaces of 2D heterostructures.
