October 2020: Rechavi wins Schmidt Science Polymath Award

Prof. Oded Rechavi, Edmond J. Safra affiliate (Life Sciences) won the new prestigious Polymath Prize. The award was given to only two scientists from around the world for a rare interdisciplinary demonstration in research.

The Polymath award was established by Schmidt Futures, for researchers exhibiting rare interdisciplinarity, and was given for the first time this year. Rechavi will receive an annual unrestricted grant of $500,000 for five years, to pursue any direction of research.

Rechavi’s lab excels in promoting interdisciplinary research. In recent years, it studied a mechanism enabling transgenerational inheritance of parental responses, showed that small RNAs are inherited alongside DNA, assisted in decoding the Dead Sea Scrolls through DNA analysis, explored the neuronal basis of irrationality, and genetically engineered parasites to enable repair of genetic diseases of the nervous system.
