Experimental Particle Physics

The goal of experimental research in particle and nuclear physics is to develop an understanding of the laws of physics at their most fundamental level through experimentation. The Department of Particle Physics conducts research in collaboration with the world’s leading particle-accelerator laboratories, such as CERN in Europe and the Jefferson Lab and SLAC in the United States. Particle accelerators recreate the conditions of the universe a split second after the Big Bang and generate new energy regimes for studying the standard model and exploring the new physics beyond our current understanding. Researchers at Tel Aviv University are involved in the development of particle-detector systems installed in accelerators, and use the data collected by the detectors to search for new particles, understand the structure of the nucleus and the forces associated with its constituents, and to study the building blocks of matter and the forces acting on them.
