Research conducted at Prof. Doron Shabat’s lab on developing revolutionary chemiluminescent (light emitting) biological probes, attracts the interest of the media

Prof. Doron Shabat’s research group at the Organic Chemistry Department is developing revolutionary chemiluminescent (light emitting) biological probes.

 

This development was reached due to a research breakthrough occurred two years ago, in which Shabat’s group solved a long standing problem: why water "turn off" the light emitted from chemical reaction in aqueous environment.

 

Following this discovery, the group was able to develop new compounds that emit light 3,000 times better than what was possible before. These compounds are used to prepare probes for detection and imaging applications in cancer treatment and will hopefully open new doors for further exploration of complex biomolecular systems using non-invasive imaging techniques.
